Kern Astronomical Society

For Bakersfield and most of the rest of Kern County, Kern Astronomical Society is the group to join if you are interested in astronomy and telescopes. They meet on the first Friday of the month at 7:30 P.M. at Northminster Presbyterian Church on north Union (3700 Union) across from Oak Warehouse in Bakersfield. You do not need to be a member to attend the meetings or the star parties. People just starting out with astronomy are especially encouraged to join (or at least come to a star party and look through some excellent telescopes or get some help with that new telescope you have!).

Their web site is www.kernastro.org. Below are the newsletters available. They are in PDF format and can be read with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Past issues from years 2000 to 2007 are available upon request.

More will be added in the future!

By the way, "syzygy" means:

  1. Either of two points in the orbit of a celestial body where the body is in opposition to or in conjunction with the Sun (i.e., either celestial body-Earth-Sun or Earth-Sun-celestial body).
  2. Either of two points in the orbit of the Moon when the Moon lies in a straight line with the Sun and the Earth.
  3. The configuration of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth lying in a straight line.
