Sculpture of the nucleus of an active galaxy studied by the Compact Array. At the center of active galaxies is a supermassive black hole with a disk of hot gaseous material spiraling into the black hole and a dust torus surrounding the hot gas disk. Some of the gas spiraling into the black hole is shot out into narrow jets along the rotation axis of the black hole (perpendicular to the gas disk).
