The public video lectures just cover the astronomy content from the Astronomy Notes textbook. The public lectures do not include the material that is for the astronomy class such as how to use the class Canvas, lecture outlines in the Student Guide, exam review documents, etc. Students in the Bakersfield College astronomy classes should use the astronomy class lecture videos posted in the class Canvas to get that class-specific content.

The video lectures are grouped together in the Light for Public YouTube playlist. Here are the individual videos for electromagnetic radiation (light):

  1. Video 1: (for webpages #1 to #3) This video is about light, also known as electromagnetic radiation, and how we find out the nature and conditions of various objects by passing the light through a spectrometer to make a spectrum. It covers the basic properties of light, taking pictures vs. taking spectra, the various forms of light from gamma rays to radio waves, and what wavelength, frequency, and intensity of light mean.

  2. Video 2: (for webpages #4 to #6) This video is about the three types of spectra: the continuous (or thermal) spectrum, the emission line spectrum, and the absorption line spectrum. It covers what types of objects will produce which type of spectrum. It includes discussion of Wien’s Law, how the color depends on the temperature, how temperature of the thin, low-density gas cloud will determine whether you see an emission line spectrum or an absorption line spectrum, and why the pattern of lines (not just one line) must be used to determine the composition of the gas cloud.

  3. Video 3: (for webpages #7 to #9) This video is about the Bohr model of the atom and how it explains emission line spectra and absorption line spectra.

  4. Video 4: (for webpage #10) This video is about the doppler effect and how we measure the radial motion direction and speed of objects.
