aurora borealis

Aurorae Borealis as seen from the edge of Fairbanks, Alaska on September 21, 2007. This image is 40% size of the original. Exposure = 3 seconds, f-stop = 2.0, ISO = 100. An even shorter exposure to try to catch more of the finer details that would get smeared out in a longer exposure. The aurora was bright enough that even a 3-second exposure would work. The bright orange "star" on the right near the bottom is Mars. Castor and Pollux are the two stars left of center bottom, beginning to rise up in the northeast. Stars of Auriga, including bright Capella, in the top right of image.
