Fountain Paint Pot Yellowstone

Fountain Paint Pot in mid-June 2008. You can see a number of bubbles in the still very watery mud. Later in the summer the mud is quite thick and the bursting bubbles can shoot mud over the boardwalk. The mud is made of clay minerals (kaolinite resulting from acids breaking down feldspar) and fine silica grains (and water, of course). This image is 42% size of original.
