National Radio Astronomy Observatory Green Bank

Conference room in the Residence Hall NRAO Green Bank

The conference room/library of the residence hall for guest observers. The people in this picture are most of the participants of the June 2011 Chautauqua short course. The windows in this image look east toward the entrance road of NRAO and windows behind the photographer look out toward the telescopes. The chalkboard on the right side of the image shows a drawing of where the new galactic arm is supposed to be. One of the projects of the June 2011 Chautauqua short course was to see if the 40-foot Telescope could detect the new arm. See my project report for the results of that. On the far right side of the image you can see the Drake Equation plaque mounted above the fireplace that was given on the 30th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences meeting on the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. The light fixtures right above table are the same ones from that 1961 meeting.
