National Radio Astronomy Observatory Green Bank

Scale of the GBT NRAO Green Bank

Here is where I wish I had a better camera than the disposable film camera! On the receiver platform looking down onto the main dish, can you see the fellow sitting down with legs outstretched near the edge of the dish (near the center of the image)? His hard hat is the dark spot to the upper right of him. I think he was one of the maintenance workers taking a lunch break. At the time we were able to take a tour of the GBT because the telescope was in its stowed position for the maintenance work that was going on while we were there. The panels of the main dish and the support beams underneath were being painted. The panels must be repainted once every several years.
