Terrestrial Planet Geology video lectures

The public video lectures just cover the astronomy content from the Astronomy Notes textbook. The public lectures do not include the material that is for the astronomy class such as how to use the class Canvas, lecture outlines in the Student Guide, exam review documents, etc. Students in the Bakersfield College astronomy classes should use the astronomy class lecture videos posted in the class Canvas to get that class-specific content.

This video set concentrates on the terrestrial planet geology. The video lectures are grouped together in the Planet Geology Public YouTube playlist. For the Jovian Planet atmospheres and interiors, see the Jovian planets video lectures. Here are the individual videos for the terrestrial planet geology:

  1. Video 1: (for webpage #11) This video is about magnetic fields of the planets. Magnetic fields are described along with why we care about them, and how they're made. It includes a description of aurorae and how the magnetic dynamo theory works. It ends with the challenge of Mercury to the magnetic dynamo theory. First of a set about terrestrial planet geology and seventh lecture for chapter 9 of Astronomy Notes.

  2. Video 2: (for webpage #12) This video is about the interiors of planets, particularly terrestrial planets. It covers how we know what the interior is like through eight methods including oblateness, density, spectroscopy, presence or lack of a magnetic field, gravity field of a planet, temperature change with depth, and seismology. A brief overview of the Earth's interior structure is given along with a comparison with the other planet interiors. Then the video covers the heat flow inside a planet via radiation, convection, and conduction and finally, the cooling time of a planet's interior. Jovian planets are covered in a different video. Second of a set about terrestrial planet geology and eighth lecture for chapter 9 of Astronomy Notes.

  3. Video 3: (for webpage #13) This video is about what shapes the surface of a terrestrial planet: impact cratering, volcanism, erosion, and tectonics. These processes also occur on large moons. Third of a set about terrestrial planet geology and ninth lecture for chapter 9 of Astronomy Notes.

  4. Video 4: (for webpage #14) This video is about plate tectonics, a special form of tectonics that is active in our solar system only on the Earth. It starts with the four unique things about Earth which includes plate tectonics and then goes into the evidence for the Theory of Plate Tectonics. The last half covers the motions of the plates today and the positive effects of plate tectonics for keeping Earth habitable in the long-term. Fourth of a set about terrestrial planet geology and tenth lecture for chapter 9 of Astronomy Notes.
