The Parkes Radio Telscope is part of the Australia Telescope National Facility. It was commissioned in 1961. The dish is 64 meters in diameter with a focal point 27 meters above the dish center. Featured in the movie "The Dish", the Parkes Radio Telescope is the one that received the best TV signals from the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. The Goldstone antenna (in California USA) received the first signal and then NASA switched to the Honeysuckle Creek station outsideo of Canberra because the Goldstone image was very dark and inverted. About nine minutes into the broadcast, NASA switched to the much better feed from Parkes. Often claimed by the Aussies to be the most beautiful radio telescope in the world, I do agree it is a pretty sight!
